Q: Why are patch cables made of such thin wire? 22AWG is really meagre.

I don't know what your application is, but plain RCA patch cables are usually made with 26AWG wire. This is actually an RG59 coax cable designed for megahertz signals. In other words, it is already complete overkill for audio connections.
