You can! But honestly you don't need the carbon. Purigen does it all, it really works wonders. Keeps my tank clear and balanced. Can't say enough good things about it. The bags I use for this are called "Boyd Enterprises ABE16720 2-Pack Chemi-Bag" also on Amazon, $4.95 and you can rinse them out when you change the purigen and rescue them, my current ones are about a year old.

If you are setting up a saltwater tank you would not want to avoid the nitrogen cycle, in fact you want to establish the nitrogen cycle..ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and I would not use purigen until you have high nitrate readings. If you are setting up a freshwater tank I do not know the answer.

No, I'm using it with R/O water and I'm doing great. I feel the nutrients are still present.
