Ring Smart Lighting – Outdoor Motion-Sensor, Black (Bridge required)

Purchased this sensor to activate outdoor lighting using Alexa but was hesitant that it wouldn't work the way I was hoping. Man was I wrong. This was the ONLY outdoor motion sensor I could find that works with Alexa and has seamless integration with other smart devices (through Alexa). Connected outdoor lights to outdoor smart plug, installed Ring bridge (req'd even with Alexa) and Ring motion sensor, and added all those smart devices to Alexa and made a routine to power the smart plug when motion is detected. Even added a condition in Alexa to only perform the routine during nighttime hours and added a second routine to power off the smart plug after 1min of no motion detected. So not only will the motion sensor trigger the lights, but I can have Alexa turn them on and off via voice command.Gotta love these smart devices! Next up is to trigger a siren when someone walks up on my deck at night!

I purchased this to work in conjunction with a battery powered Ring solar floodlight, both of which are mounted to trees halfway down my driveway.I was worried that the sensor would not be able to serve my needs due to the distance of its placement from the bridge and also its being powered by only 3 AAA batteries.After more than a month of daily heavy use with all settings on the most power demanding option, I can report that the batteries (rechargeables) are reading 54%, the connection strength to the Ring bridge is "fair", and that the floodlight activates very quickly after motion is detected.Additionally, the senor detects motion of the type and distance that I would expect without giving me too many unnecessary alerts. Vehicles and people are detected at approximately 15 yards but it is not triggered by leaves falling etc. This product is highly recommended and may resolve any detection issues you may be having with another Ring product.I have included a screenshot from the satellite view of my property which is in a rural and heavily wooded area. The "o" denotes the location of the bridge with each "x" being the floodlight and sensor, the latter of which is farthest from the bridge.

Updated review (original review below). I was contacted by an executive Ring support person. He was very helpful and explained that the original replacement wasn't ordered for some reason. The replacement arrived a few days later. It is working well.Original review:This thing only worked for around 6 months, and then stopped working completely. During that 6 months it gave false alerts constantly for motion of shadows from clouds and the sun. Then it completely died, no motion detection at all. Called Ring support and they said they would send a replacement. That was months ago and no replacement came.

My Ring Doorbell 2 wouldn't detect someone coming up my front sidewalk until they were almost at the door, so I got the Ring Outdoor Motion Sensor to place farther down the sidewalk to turn on the doorbell camera earlier. The detector constantly sends motion-detected alerts when no one is there and, even if someone *is* there, it doesn't start the doorbell recording for up to 40 seconds. For example, the other day (2/16/2020) my Echo Dot said, "Motion detected by the Frontwalk Motion Detector," and I walked over to the front door to look out the window to see if there was anything that would have set it off. As it turned out, three kids were getting out of their car at the end of my sidewalk. Two got out on the passenger side facing the house, and the driver got out on the other side and walked around the front of the car. They stood a little bit, one checking her phone, and then all three walked moderately slowly to the neighbor's house. It probably took me a few seconds to get to the door; I probably stood there watching 15 to 20 seconds; I imagine it took them another 5 to 10 seconds or more to get out of camera range on the right. I checked my computer to see whether the doorbell had been triggered, and it had. When I looked at the video, I was amazed that no one was there at all! That means that it must have been up to 40 seconds between when the motion detector "saw" the motion and when the triggering of the Front Doorbell camera started recording!!! What good is that?!?Also, at least sometimes, if the motion detector has set the doorbell camera to recording and someone presses the doorbell, it rings on their side, but no ring alert is sent. And, since sometimes Ring products get stuck on alerting every 15 minutes or every 30 minutes or every 5 minutes, etc., I stop checking why — meaning I don't see them ringing the bell. And the 40-second delay means the doorbell isn't triggered to record any sooner than it recorded without the additional motion detector.I have spent 20, 30, maybe 40 hours trying to get the Ring products to work as they should, with dozens of calls to Ring about it. A Ring support agent asked by e-mail to let her know if her reset solved my issues, and I sent four detailed replies about tests and which videos to see; then I discovered they didn't go to her, just to a general help address, and I have had no response at all.

During daylight hours, it works pretty well. Only detects motion within about 10 feet during darkness.Update: Was impressed when ring support contacted me after seeing my i initial review. Unfortunately, they didn’t provide any meaningful solution to the limited detection range at night. Didn’t even offer to replace the sensor in the event it was defective, so I assume that it a limitation of the design. I have outside security cameras that detect motion, 50 to 60 feet away in darkness, not sure why the ring technology is so inferior.Pretty useless as a means of triggering outside security lights when an intruder has to get within 5 feet of the sensor.Update #2: I was contacted by ring again. They explained that the way I was trying to use this device was not what it was designed for. While they were unable to improve the limitations on motion detection at night for this device, I’m happy to say they provided a great alternative.
