20th Century Boys, Vol. 3: Hero With a Guitar sees the protagonist, Kenji, go through a lot of trials and tribulations; this is a dark book. Although a lot of bad things happen to him, he does get closer to drawing together the allies he's going to need to save the world. The volume ends with the introduction of a mysterious, new character: Shogun. He lives in Thailand, but no one knows where he comes from or what his real name is. He doesn't do much in this volume, but I'm sure he's going to play a part in later editions.A recurring theme in this manga is Kenji not being able to remember key people and key incidents from his early years, to which there are many flashbacks. As he gradually remembers the game he and the others played as kids, he's more able to stop the Friend's plans. There are a lot of characters in this manga, and the dramatis personae at the front of the volume is very useful. If you've gotten this far, you know that while the series is a fun read, it's not something you breeze through. ****1/2

Les petits garçons japonais du début des années 1970 étaient comme les petits garçons français. Un terrain vague à proximité et, en petite bande, ils fabriquaient des repères secrets et inventaient toute forme d'aventures dans lesquelles ils devaient combattre quelque conspiration démoniaque menaçant la terre entière. Pour le héros de ce manga réalisé par un maître du genre, le passé oublié d'il y a 25 ans refait surface quand les méfaits planétaires qu'il imaginait combattre gamin avec ses copains surviennent réellement. Gérant d'un modeste commerce de proximité, comment cet encore jeune homme va-t-il s'y prendre pour sauver le monde ? Ce 3ème volume est à l'image des deux premiers sauf que le mystère commence à se lever et qu'il devient urgent d'agir. Très hautement recommandé.
