Yes, I believe it could be used for hard cheese. I use mine for slicing garlic. It works perfectly.

I haven't tried it on chocolate yet, but I would imagine that it would work well, so long as the chocolate is good and hard. I use it primarily for garlic and shallots. This is honestly one of my favorite kitchen tools.
