Great - needs patience. Use whole grain flour & control your environment!

I was sure my starter wasn't working for at least a week - it needs patience and be sure you use a whole grain. I contacted customer support and they helped me. I don't think the small pamphlet that comes with the starter is enough info. Definitely go to the website and contact customer support for guidance. I did start mine with white rice flour, (meant to buy brown online & got mislead by the search result). Once I started brown rice, the starter seemed to be more active. When the liquid appeared on top (called hooch) during the first week or two, I would discard it but add additional water to make up for what I poured off - it doesn't happen anymore. I started this in mid December, it's cold right now in the PNW so I put it in bottom of my oven with the light turned on and a kitchen towel to keep it ajar + a sheet pan on the top shelf...these 3 things helped maintain 75-80 degrees. Or I would keep my starter above my oven on a pullout shelf when the oven was in use and left the oven ajar when it was done baking. At 4 weeks my starter had the perfect sour flavor and was doubling. I've had some successes and failures with my baking experiments - it takes a lot of adjusting due to environmental conditions. All my successful recipes have been from Bakerita. Good luck, be patient (it may take 7-14 days before it's ready to use), use a whole grain such as brown rice, and contact customer service before you give up. It's SO worth it!

Harassment over refund by Customer Service!

I have used this starter for many years, I have fed the starter and grown the starter from this co . many times! When I mentioned that I am familiar with their starter and I use it in my bakery, that this one specifically did not work and would not come alive no matter how much I fed it, given the fact that I have used all the same water, temperature etc. before, I figured they would understand that I was very educated on baking with their starter. I figured I would get a refund given that, their starter did not work. Their product was bad. When I mentioned this I got the runaround, I was asked 1 million questions, told that if I didn't answer the questions that nothing would be done, I told them I already answered your question When I mentioned that I am familiar with their starter and I use it in my bakery, that this one specifically did not work and would not come alive no matter how much I said it, given the fact that I have used all the same water, temperature etc. before, I figured they would understand that I was very educated on baking with their starter. When I mentioned this I got the runaround, I was asked 1 million questions, told that if I didn't answer the questions that nothing would be done, I told them I already answered your questions as I've used your starter before. That should be the biggest answer to your question, I'm not ignorant I know what I'm doing here and I do the same thing every time with your starter. This starter is dead. They still would not give me a refund, harassed me a little more and said just this one time they're gonna send me another starter!I would never order from this company again. And I sent them a lot of business through my bakery!Horrible customer service. When somebody simply asks for a refund and shows you proof that your starter doesn't work. You just do it or you're gonna lose a lot of business!

Gluten free sourdough who would have thunk it?

I grew up around San Francisco, and was raised on sourdough bread. When I moved out east, there wasn’t any around at the time. I made whole wheat bread and loved it. When I was diagnosed with celiac disease, no more bread for me. Now not only can I have sourdough bread, it’s gluten free!! Yeah

Worked well for me!

This was incredibly easy to feed and care for. In September of 2022 I became GF. Being 26 it was definitely a change to get use to. I made a few loaves of GF bread but was missing good ole' sourdough bread but couldnt find any in store that was GF, so I purchased this packet and figured I would make it myself.I used Bob's Red Mill Brown Rice Flour and our houses well water (our well is non chlorinated - this is really important, if your water is chlorinated it will kill your sourdough!).On day two I saw bubbles and rising which was insane. The two photos I attached are at the end of day three after a feed and it has some insane rise and lots of bubbling going on. So far I'm very impressed and excited to be able to use my starter in a few days.Update: Added 3/19I made my starter on 2/9, it is now 3/19 and it is going strong. I've made many loaves of bread, banana bread, discard crackers, etc. Very impressed still!

Confusing instructions

This starter works! My only complaint (and reason for 4 stars, not 5) is that the instructions for each starter should be sent separately along with the type you bought. I assumed my instructions were for the Gluten free starter that I ordered and didn’t realize that those are on one side and a totally different starter instruction (for San Francisco, Whole wheat and Rye) is on the other. So, I mistakenly started it with the wrong instructions for a couple days! Thankfully, it worked anyway!

Completely overpriced

This sourdough starter is completely overpriced. The quality is excellent though.$15 dollars is unheard of!!

Great starter, especially for beginners

I have been wanting to do sourdough for so long, but I'm gluten free so that made it a little more difficult. After much research I finally broke down and ordered this stuff. It did take a little longer to get it started then I thought it would. But when I contacted their customer service line about it they were incredibly helpful and always got back to my promptly. Their website also has a ton of great information on it! So far everything I have made has tasted great. Great quality and great value for my money!

Does not work

I agree with some of the other reviews. Perhaps I received a dud, but it seems this may be a scam. I have followed the directions to a T and there is not sign of an active starter. You may be just be better off making my own from scratch..
